Diego Luna in Andor

The revolution will be televised, and there will be dancing. The trailer for the second season of Andor is here, and the vibe is, delightfully, more hopeful than one might have expected. Sure, there’s Saw Gerrera giving a perfectly impassioned Saw speech, and there are explosions (and the tired blam-blam-blam of weapons firing in time with the music), but there’s also dancing. And hugs. And Ben Mendelsohn delivering a really funny line about a “swell party.” And yes, K-2SO is here.

(The Steve Earle song is a weird choice; I will never quite get used to Star Wars properties using existing jams. But yes, the lyrics are relevant. Clearly.)

According to StarWars.com, “Season 2 will see the characters and their relationships intensify as the horizon of war draws near and Cassian becomes a key player in the Rebel Alliance. Everyone will be tested and, as the stakes rise, the betrayals, sacrifices and conflicting agendas will become profound.”

The second season of Andor will cover the remaining four years leading up to the events of Rogue One; the 12-episode season consists of “four weekly chapters of three episodes each.” One certainly hopes that this season will be a bit clearer about the passage of time than the first season was (though when this is my only complaint, it’s doing just fine).

But why is Mon Mothma dancing? Show us the dance, Andor. We want to see the dancing now.

Andor stars Diego Luna, Stellan Skarsgård, Genevieve O’Reilly, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, Adria Arjona, Faye Marsay, Varada Sethu, Elizabeth Dulau, Alan Tudyk, Ben Mendelsohn, and Forest Whitaker. Creator Tony Gilroy wrote the first three episodes of the upcoming season; Beau Willimon wrote episodes four through six, Dan Gilroy episodes seven through nine, and episodes 10-12 come from author-turned-video-game-writer Tom Bissell (Extra Lives). The season’s directors are Ariel Kleiman, Janus Metz, and Alonso Ruizpalacios. All three directors are new to this season.
